<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;">Previously, I
outlined method for deriving planetary parameters based on your world
map. I will now continue with this.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;">I. Surface gravity:
Though we have already covered escape velocity, surface gravity is
different. I have not found a calculator to do this, but it is not
difficult. The formula is <i>g = </i><strong><i><span style="font-weight: normal;">G
* M / r</span></i></strong><strong><sup><i><span style="font-weight: normal;">2</span></i></sup></strong><strong><i><span style="font-weight: normal;">.</span></i></strong><strong><i>
</i></strong><strong><i><span style="font-weight: normal;">G</span></i></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">
here is the gravitational constant. Multiply your planet’s mass by
6.67 * 10</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">-11</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">.
Note the negative integer. Take the resulting value and divide it by
your planet’s radius (in meters) squared. The result is in
meters/second</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">2</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">.
You can find calculators on the internet that will convert this to
feet/second</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">2</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">

Axial tilt. The Earth is tilted 23.</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">25</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">°.
This tilt changes over the course of thousands of years, and the
Earth is currently at about the midpoint of its range. This, like
rotation, is determined at planet formation and influenced by
bombardment of comets and asteroids and other bodies. You can set it
at any value that you wish. Greater tilt means more severe seasons,
and less tilt more mild seasons. </span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">Reddit
and Stack Exchange are full of discussion of radical axial tilt. What
seems different is actually commonplace. </span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">Planetary
mean temperature is a function of the distance to the star and the
axial tilt, but there is really no need to go into this unless you
are really interested. And bored. Axial tilt does have an impact on
climate and weather, which will be discussed.</span></span></strong></span></span></div>

Atmospheric Circulation. </span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">This
is how all of this got started. I asked a question: Given Earth-like
conditions and the geography that I have decided exists, will the
weather be what I want it to be? And what can I do to make it what I
want?</span></span></strong></span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;">

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;"><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"> The
answers and what I learned to get them </span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">will
have a major impact on your planet’s climate. Around the equator
and stretching 300 to 600 miles in width is the Inter Tropical
Convergence Zone (ITCZ). </span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">The
ITCZ</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">
is where the sun is overhead during the equinoxes </span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">(roughly
the equator)</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">,
and it heats the ocean resulting in evaporation. Warm air rises and
flows toward the poles, creating the Hadley cells. </span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">This
creates low pressure and surface air flows in to replace it. </span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">The
air descends at about 30°. </span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">This
air is dry, having dropped most of it’s moisture </span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">to
create the rain in the tropics</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">.
Most of the world’s deserts occur around 30</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">°
</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">latitude.
Coastal areas, particularly east coasts, typical</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">ly</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">
avoid being deserts due to ocean currents.</span></span></strong></span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;">
</span></span><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;"><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"> </span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">On
Earth, t</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">here
are three cells per hemisphere, but rather than flow straight north
and south, the Coriolis Effect causes the air flow of the Hadley
Cells to drift eastward. The Temperate cell flows toward the Hadley
Cell. The Hadley Cell transp</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">o</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">rts
warm air towards the poles and the Polar Cell and Temperate cell
facilitate the return trip. </span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">If
you know where the boundaries of these cells are, you have an
approximate location of the jet streams (Jet Stream, Temperate Jet,
Polar Jet) which are strong determiners of weather.</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">
The references below include more detailed descriptions of this. </span></span></strong></span></span>
</div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;">
</span></span><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;"><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"> Here’s
where it gets complicated. The whole damn thing moves. The Tropic of
Cancer is the latitude where the sun appears overhead on the summer
solstice, and the Tropic of Capricorn is where it appears overhead on
the winter solstice. The ITCZ follows the sun and shifts the
atmospheric cells. </span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">The
size of the cells can also fluctuate, but that is beyond the scope
here. For our purposes, it is enough to know that depending on where
you are on your planet </span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">and
when</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">,
winds can shift depending on season. If your axial tilt is only ten
degrees, that means that during the winter, the sun will barely rise
above the horizon.</span></span></strong></span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;">
</span></span><div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;"><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"> All
of this is absurdly simplified, but giving some consideration to this
will help you establish wind direction and basic weather patterns.

worry there are clear illustrations, too).</span></span></strong></span></span></div>

Orbital Resonance: </span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">Orbital
resonance refers to the regular gravitational influence that
planetary bodies exert upon each each other, typically involving low
number ratios. In other words, the influence of other planets helps
keep your planet in its orbit. This is pretty complicated stuff, but
Wikipedia has a nice animation demonstrating the idea. I have not
chosen to explore this much, even in addressing the moons of Kemen. A
handwave seems appropriate here. I have ruled that there are two
inner and at least two outer planets in the Kemen system to keep
everything on track. If you wish to include other planets in your
campaign, orbital resonance may be interesting to you.</span></span></strong></span></span></div>

<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Greetings!</div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Here is another
infrequent installment of a series of posts describing things I do in
my campaign that you might interested in doing yourself.</div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
What I am talking
about is called “worldbuilding,” but is more like world modeling.
I am going to show you how to create a model world with a minimum of
math, that you can use to give justification to your world and create
opportunities for new adventures.</div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
(<i>Wait! Why would
I care? D&D is about dungeons! </i><span style="font-style: normal;">First,
many adventures can occur on the surface. The Three Musketeers, Robin
Hood, and many other adventures occurred </span><i>above</i><span style="font-style: normal;">
ground. Even stories like </span><i>The Lord of the Rings </i><span style="font-style: normal;">were
mostly above ground.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-style: normal;"> (Second,
just how many times do you think that you’re going to be able to
convince your paladin that going into a dark, dirty dungeon, where
his armor does not shine and his banner (and hair) do</span><span style="font-style: normal;">es
not flow in the wind of his steed, so you can </span><i>steal </i><span style="font-style: normal;">gold
and magic from the dead, is not too ignoble an endeavor for one of his
station? Now, stop interrupting!)</span><br />
<span style="font-style: normal;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="font-style: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Step
One: Make it an alternate Earth. Okay, you’re done!</div>
<div style="font-style: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-style: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-style: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
You’re
still reading. That means you either find this entertaining, or you
want to know how to model a world with parameters different from the
ones of Earth. You’re sure you want do to this? Okay…</div>
<div style="font-style: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-style: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
I.
As a DM, you most likely have maps of your world. Some of these show
the area around encounter areas, others perhaps cities in relation to
each other, etc. The point is that you have maps of different scales.
Perhaps you’ve mapped your whole world, or maybe, like me, only a
portion and you’re saving the rest for future expansion.</div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-style: normal;"> Pull
out your largest scale map. If this map has lines of latitude, great.
If not, you will need to add some. The only ones you really need are
two major ones. It might be the Equator and the Tropic of Cancer, it
might the </span><span style="font-style: normal;">from the north pole</span><span style="font-style: normal;">
to </span><span style="font-style: normal;">45</span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;">°.
Any two will do, but it is important for you to be able to determine
the number of degrees between the two. For example, </span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;">from
the Equator to the northern boundary of the Tropic of Cancer is
typically 30</span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;">°
</span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;">(there
are conditions where it’s not, but let’s not get into that just
yet).</span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;">
</span></span>
</div>
<div style="font-style: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"> Using
the scale of your map, determine the distance (in miles, kms, dragon lengths, whatever) between these two
lines. Yes, I know that maps are flat and planets are not, just do
it.</span></div>
<div style="font-style: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;">II.
</span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;">Covert the number of degrees between your two latitude lines to radians. Here’s how:
<a href="http://www.1728.org/radians.htm">http://www.1728.org/radians.htm</a>
. For </span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;">example,
45</span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;">°
</span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;">=
.79 radians.</span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;">
</span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;">On
the linked page, you will see an equation, S= r*</span></span><span style="font-family: "constantia" , serif;"><span style="font-style: normal;">Θ</span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;">.
You can use this equation </span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;"><b>or
scroll down</b></span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">
and use the calculator. S= arc length, or the measure of the distance
because the two latitude lines in step I. Enter the central angle in
radians (remember the decimal point!), and press calculate. The
answer is the radius of your planet. Write this down where you won’t
lose it.</span></span></span></div>
<div style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<i><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-weight: normal;"> Change
this number to kilometers, and keep all your measurements in metric!
</span></span></i><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">It’s
easy to convert them later in to miles, leagues, </span></span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">mille
passus, cubits, or whatever unit you prefer. For calculations, do it
in metric.</span></span></span></div>
<div style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">III.
You have the radius. Multiply it by two. Now you have the planet’s
diameter. Use the calculator on your computer or online to cube your
radius, (raise the number to the third power) and multiply that
number by 4.188. </span></span></span><i><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-weight: normal;">V=
4/3</span></span><span style="font-family: "constantia" , serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">π</span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-weight: normal;">*r</span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-weight: normal;">3</span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-weight: normal;">.</span></span></i><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">
</span></span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">Your
answer should be in cubic meters (m</span></span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">3</span></span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">).
</span></span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">Now
you have radius, diameter and volume of your planet. </span></span></span>
</div>
<div style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";">IV. At this point, I’ll introduce some
more sites. The first is useful for doing computations without having
to constantly convert back and forth out of scientific notation.</span></div>

calculator will return any of three values as long as you have the

to divide, and press calculate. You will get a number in scientific

Whatever your number is, go to
<a href="https://www.omnicalculator.com/physics/escape-velocity">https://www.omnicalculator.com/physics/escape-velocity</a>
and enter it next to where it says “Earths.” This is your planet
measured in Earth masses. Next enter your radius in km, and verify
the units. Now look at the escape velocity. Write down this number.</span></span></div>

So now you have a number of parameters for your planet. Don’t go
applying to NASA just yet. </span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;">Click

<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"> Is
your planet’s escape velocity above 7 km/sec? If so, it will be
fairly Earthlike. If not, it will not have oceans and will likely be
very dry, like Mars, because it will be incapable of preventing water

reading...) </span>

Dig out your radius, multiply it by 6.28. This is the circumference
of your planet. (Note, I generally round everything to two decimal
places to keep everything simple, but you don’t have to).</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;"> Now
we have what I call a fudge factor. How long do you want your
planet’s day to be? Divide your circumference by the number of
(Earth) hours in your planet’s day. Now you have the equatorial
rotation speed. For </span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;">comparison,
for </span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;">Earth,
the speed is about 1,000 mph. </span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;">(460

<div style="font-style: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"> Just
like we did with mass, we want to convert our parameters of radius
and rotation to units where Earth = 1. So divide the radius of your
planet by 6378 km. Do the same with your rotation: divide the hours
of your planet’s full rotation by 24. Now multiply them together
and compare the result here:</span></div>

cells your planet’s atmosphere has. Earth has 3 per hemisphere.
Venus and Titan have 1. Rotation is very important to all this.
Rotation creates creates the Coriolis effect, and this is turn has a
pretty big impact on our climate and weather. </span></span></span><span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">If
your rotation is slow, your day will be longer but it will also make
it more likely that your planet will only have one cell per
hemisphere. If your planet is closer to its star and has a slow
rotation, it is possible for it to be habitable. In fact, if it is
closer to the star it can only be habitable if it has a slow
rotation. Rotation also has an impact on the generation of magnetic
fields which deflect the solar wind. If your rotation is too fast,
you won’t have as much sunlight because your day will be shorter
and that will affect sleep and growth cycles. </span></span></span>

<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"> All of this world building material is

<div style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"> Relax. Kemen had to be reworked several
times. Here’s what you can do.</span></div>
<div style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"> If you want a wet world and your
planet’s escape velocity is below 7, you have to makes some
changes. There are some “fudge factors” in all this. The first is
density. Planetary density is an average of the substances that make
up the planet. Earth has iron-nickel core surrounded by a mantle of
silicates and metals. There are higher density elements in the Earth,
though they are not present in the same high quantity as iron and
nickel, and of course the oceans and atmosphere are less dense. Thus,
we need an average. </span>
</div>
<div style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"> In the process above, we used 5514 kg/m3
for the density figure. This is the density of Earth. Earth is the
most dense object known in the solar system, but doesn’t mean that
it is automatically at the end of the scale. Higher densities could
be achieved with greater concentrations of metals, but I’d be
careful not to go above 6500-7000 kg/m3. I’m not sure
what those higher density values mean. In the case of Kemen, I have
ruled that there are higher concentrations of heavy metals, and
further, that the oceans are not as deep as Earth’s so there is
less water to average. </span>
</div>
<div style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"> So you can increase the density and see
if that changes your numbers. If you’re close to seven, it may do
the trick. If not, about the only fix (short of a handwave or magic)
is to increase the mass. The way I did it was to plug small increases
into the calculator
<a href="https://www.omnicalculator.com/physics/escape-velocity">https://www.omnicalculator.com/physics/escape-velocity</a>
and backtracking the math so if I could live with it. For example,
instead of .28 Earths, I’d bump it up to .30 or .32 to see what
escape velocity I got. When I one I was happy with (close to 8), I
reversed the equations and calculators. I entered the mass and
density and calculated for volume, divided by 4.188, and took the
cube root (raise to 1/3 on a calculator) of the remaining number to
get the radius. It changed some distances, but only by about 100
miles or so, and I decided I could live with it.</span></div>
<div style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"> This has gotten longer than I intended.
Here are some references and useful sites for learning more,
especially about atmospheric circulation. Next week, I will talk
about some other parameters, such as surface gravity, atmospheric
circulation and weather, and orbital resonance.</span></div>

<br />
I'm still around. I have been busy. Aduialtham is hold while I work on some other projects, but it is so close to complete that I don't expect it to take long once I actually get to it. I have been working on a nearby area because players have decided to explore it. The overland portion of the campaign is really hot with them right now. And I have a new NPC to post that will prove to be lots of fun.<br />
<br />
When I next post models, you can expect Aduialtham, Kortyr, Tyrmond and Bainsloa -- all locations in my campaign and demonstrating, I think, advances in my 3D abilities.<br />

How like to the seasons of life!<br />
<br />
Enough poetry.<br />
<br />
So here is the status of the pieces of Aduialtham:<br />
<br />
<b> <i>The Wing</i></b>: Complete. This was a major undertaking, though it started out as a diversion.<br />
<i> <b> Summer Hall</b></i>: 90% complete. That is assuming, I don't have another creative burst... <i>Edit: Always a dangerous assumption!</i><br />
<i> <b> Winter Hall</b></i>: Only the bare bones, but given that it is a variation of the Summer Hall, I do<br />
not anticipate too many problems. <i>Famous last words</i>. Edit: New inspiration that will make it fantastic -- though hopefully not take too long.<br />
<i> <b> The Promenade</b></i>: complete.<br />
<b> <i> The Watchtower</i></b>: complete. I've learned some new techniques that made me rethink the whole thing. But it's done.<br />
<i><b> Terrace and Terrain</b>:</i> Neither of these has really even been started, primarily because they are easy. I've played with some scratch models.<br />
<br />
I hope your summer is going well!<br />

<br />
An update on my progress. I had hoped that my progress n Aduialtham would give the momentum to complete it. I really should know me better by now.<br />
<br />
So here is the status of the pieces of Aduialtham:<br />
<br />
<b> <i>The Wing</i></b>: Complete. This was a major undertaking, though it started out as a diversion.<br />
<i> <b> Summer Hall</b></i>: 85-90% complete. That is assuming, I don't have another creative burst...<br />
<i> <b> Winter Hall</b></i>: Only the bare bones, but given that it is a variation of the Summer Hall, I do<br />
not anticipate too many problems. <i>Famous last words</i>.<br />
<i> <b> The Promenade</b></i>: 90% complete. I have only to correct some structures that didn't<br />
quite meet up. I'm not sure how to proceed as yet.<br />
<b> <i> The Watchtower</i></b>: about 50% complete. I'm finding that my vision of this was incomplete, and I'm having to try different things.<br />
<i><b> Terrace and Terrain</b>:</i> Neither of these has really even been started, primarily because they are easy. I've played with some scratch models.<br />
<br />
So it all may take longer than projected.<br />
<br />
Also, as diversions there remains the unnamed project, and something new. The new project is an exteriors only model of Upper Tyrmond, which should be lots of fun. It started as part of a development of an underused area of the campaign, a sort of frontier dominated by competing, but not (as yet) hostile irenoni (clans). The oldsters cleared and settled (well, enough for crops) the land, but now the next generation is coming to power, split by allegiance to rival religious cults. The youngest generation has come of age ("grown full"), and is choosing sides...I just now realized how timely this may be. Think Boomers, GenXers and Millenials fighting over territory in a fantasy setting instead of school prayer and transgender bathrooms! Throw the PC's in the middle, in which they must fight to stop a clan war. There is a nearby encounter area that could provide info that could turn the tide...Considering the discussion of it nearly half this post, perhaps you can understand how diverting it is!<br />
<br />
I am determined to post new work as soon as I am able. Until then!<br />

be finished, for now, with Ninannyr. I may come back to it at a later
date, and add some detail. I never added the outer curtain wall, so
you'll have to imagine it. Unlike the model presented here, it is not
symmetrical and the gate is to the left of the front of the main
castle. It is here where you would find the stables, blacksmith, workshops and storehouses. I might also add in the topography. It is on a slight
elevation.<br />
<div style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
The model is not
perfect, but I suspect only I will notice.
</div>
<br />
<br />
<b>Some In-Character Facts</b><br />
<div style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Ix Ninannyr is the
property of the Duke of Ninannyr, and lends it's name to the town
nearby as well as the province. It is not his primary residence, but
he insists that it remain fully staffed and operational, as it is the
center of military power in the region. This is pretty unnecessary as
we'll see, but none have the power to question him.</div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Ninannyr is a very
old fortification that has been rebuilt several times, as will be
noted in the difference in masonry. The current form is about 100
years old. The main building is the hall and keep. The hall was built
onto the former keep, which was renovated and expanded. The buildings
in front of it are a bakery and a brewery of sorts. Each includes a
room for consumption of the products, and accommodations on the floor
above. The top floors are largely open spaces for storage and
servants. </div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">

Ninannyr, aside
from being distastefully symmetrical (to my tastes), is an example of
older human design. Newer designs are larger and less
symmetrical. The castle is well kept, but considered small and
cramped by those who visit it. It is something of a cross between a fortification and a palace.<br />

The fountain is fed from a cistern behind it, which in turn
is fed from channels on the walls. (A castle in Poland did much the
same thing, but I don't remember the name of it.) The walls and
towers supply the accommodations for the guards and watch.<br />

The Ditinni clan
(“irenon,” in the tongue of the land) has grown quite rich,
by exploiting both the arable lands of the region and the trade routes
which pass through it. Astute observers will note that the bakery and
brewery buildings obscure the courtyard from the walls. When
engineers pointed this out, the duchess at the time, a feisty and
demanding woman, is rumored to have said, “What force of men or
orcs could fight its way so far inland and enter into the inner
courtyard only to be defeated by an arrow shot from the walls? Build
as you are ordered.”</div>

This is the hall that was built onto the original keep. The stairs to the left leads to the kitchens, pantry and well. There is another very small and very rudimentary kitchen in the keep itself. The curtain leads to the stairs and keep. The arms are the actual arms of the Ditinni irenon.<br />

The pictures are clickable jpgs. If you click one it should set up a slideshow of all of them. If there is something that you would like to see that isn't pictured here, ask. I can easily post a jpeg of it.<br />
<br />
This entire model was created in Sketchup, a <i><b>free</b></i> 3D modelling program (or app, if you choose). You can download and run Sketchup and make your own models, or download mine and twist them up to suit your fancy, or go to the Sketchup 3D Warehouse and download the models there. The Tomb of Horrors Walkthrough is pretty cool ( <a href="https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/search.html?q=tomb+of+horrors&backendClass=both">https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/search.html?q=tomb+of+horrors&backendClass=both</a> ) but there are over 290 models there as well. That includes ever evolving version of The Keep on the Borderlands.<br />
<br />
Sketchup is easy to learn, very intuitive, unlike other programs. I think it can be tricky to master (I'll let you know for sure when I get there). I started this project in July of 2015, according to the file data. Most of it was finished within about six months before I needed to step away and work on something else. I often overlap projects, and let's face it, I'm obnoxious about detail. You could probably knock out a less detailed version in a day or less, depending on your desired level of detail.<br />
<br />
Ninannyr ("Nih-NAHN-nyur") is small, symmetrical and linear. It is an example of both early fortifications in Slyr Dorom, and of Mannish architecture. Next up is Aduialtham ("Ahd-WHEEL-tham"), the stronghold of an elf lord. The difference between the two should be striking.<br />
<br />
So. Now that I've teased it, I should set about finishing it.<br />

<br />
I post today to report that I will be unable to meet my projection of posting new work by the end of the year. Certain structures have given me difficulty, so it will be a little longer than I had hoped.<br />
<br />
As a way of foreshadowing, here are the projects "in the hopper" that I hope to post soon:<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li><i>Ix Ninannyr:</i> A human-built castle, in 3D. This is a stronghold that has been rebuilt several times, and is currently a cross between a working fortress and a ducal showpiece. January, likely.</li>
<li><i>Aduialtham: </i>The <i>Aduialtham</i> complex is the stronghold of a powerful elf-lord. The difference between <i>Ninannyr </i>and <i>Aduialtham </i>will be striking, I believe, as it should be. The file is enormous, but visually pleasing. Eye candy, actually. February-March is my current projection.</li>
<li>Unnamed: It is unnamed because I wish to keep it secret until it is completed. This one may take quite a bit longer to complete, as less work has been completed upon it. June?</li>
</ol>
Were I able to to work non-stop and without interruption...but the bills must be paid. I think that once these projects are ready, there will be no question that I have gained a level of experience in 3D work.<br />

<br />
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";">While I complete some projects of 3D witchery, here is a brief text to bridge the hiatus somewhat. I hope to post my current work by the end of the year. </span></div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";">Elves
are a difficult but fascinating topic of which many of us cannot get
enough. Much has been written about elves by many different authors,
and not all of it agrees. So here are some ideas to help clarify the
characteristics of the elves of Kemen, that may also be fodder for your own campaign. This is not intended to be exhaustive.</span></div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";">To
call elves (or any other race) “demi-human” is to practice
extreme bias, almost discrimination. The term references humans and
makes them the standard. While D&D references the game’s bias
towards humans, this would seem to go too far. Elves are not skinny
humans. They are an entirely different race. Their bodies look
different because they are built differently.</span></div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";">First
of all, in appearance elves tend to the slender proportions,
typically similar to people of Asian descent. This has the effect of
suggesting elegance to other races, especially humans. One might
then incorrectly conclude that elven women tend to be flat chested.
This is not the case. In fact, though some possess modest bosoms,
many are quite buxom. It is the frame upon which their breasts rest
that maintains a general slender proportion. Similarly, elf men are
not “bird chested.” They can be quite well defined and very
strong, if not as massive as their human counterparts, because they
are not little humans but a separate race altogether. Their bodies
are built differently, their muscle tissue more dense. A similarly sized human would usually be less strong, while a human sized elf (six feet or more) would possess super-human strength -- if the current use of humans as the point of reference may be excused.</span>
</div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";">Elves
in Kemen are a mixing of Tolkien's LOTR and Gygax's Dungeons and
Dragons. They are not immortal (generally) but very long-lived. They
do sleep and dream, though lightly and for less time. They are not
all fair skinned blondes, as seem to be the case in LOTR. Neither
are they all the dark haired, green eyed creatures of Gygax. Hair, eye
and skin combinations tend to depend upon the tribe and type. The
Muinar (wood elves, to the rest of the multi-verse) do <i>tend</i> toward darker features, with brownish hair, green eyes and fair to
medium complexion. The High Elves, are more varied and, in fact are
the most varied of the three types. At least one tribe has dark, curly hair and light eyes, making them look almost human but for their pointed ears.</span></div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"> </span>
</div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
</div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";">The
Aire-Nolari, the Gray Elves, are the most unique and rare of all. Their eyes are most often violet, and their hair is generally silver. They most embody the idea of fairies.</span></div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";">Beyond
appearances, there are other differences. Being a race that lives
longer than pretty much any other, elves often appear to others to be
the most egregious procrastinators. This is because they’d rather
sing a song or explore an idea than become accomplished at the
mundane, for which there is plenty of time. If there is a band of
orcs nearby, sure, let’s go hunting! But as for getting married and
having children, well, what’s the rush? This is why elves (in
Kemen) tend to be less common. They don’t breed as quickly or as
copiously as other races. In fact, it is generally true as a whole in
Kemen that the shorter the lifespan the earlier breeding occurs and
more offspring that come from a particular union. For elves, this
apparent “commitment issue” is related to their long lives.</span></div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";">In
the long view of the Elves, things like jealousy and possessiveness
are foolish. There are those who commit to stay together for long
periods of time, but generally this is for the purpose of raising
young. Most spend a period of time of their choosing with another,
and then move off to share time with and enjoy someone else. As a
result, most elves have consorts rather than spouses, and most have
more than one. The lives of the elves are too long and beauty too
varied to restrict oneself to loving only one person, yet those lives
are long enough to recognize that love of one does not diminish
the capacity of love for another.</span></div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><i>Boom
Chicka Wow Wow! </i><span style="font-style: normal;">Yes, the elves
get around, but while they are with a particular consort they are
monogamous. This might seem exotic to us, but remember elves don’t
even reach middle age until they are about 500 years old. Do you
remember the first time you were able to say that you had known
someone for 10, 15, 20 years or more? Remember how that felt? How
long have you been at your job? Most likely, you haven’t even been
breathing for a hundred years (and many a’ blessin’ to you if you
have, though it seems you’ve had your share o’ blessin’s
already). Can you imagine knowing someone that long? Can you imagine
having a friend for 500 years? How long have you been married? ‘Til
death do us part, right? Can you imagine being with the same person
for 500 years? How about 800? “If she’s the right one...” Blah,
blah, blah. </span><span style="font-style: normal;">Do you think
she’d agree?</span></span></div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";">Regardless
of the way humans manage things, elves (in Kemen) do as described
above, and do not see it as exotic. Neither do they find it strange
that the short lived races manage things as they do.</span></div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";">Most
of recorded human history on Kemen has occurred with the period of a
few thousand years. Hardly time enough to call it history, from an
elven perspective!</span></div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "abyssinica sil";"><span style="font-style: normal;">This
example about love and marriage is only one. I encourage you to think
about other ways that long life might change your point of view of
various topics, and to extrapolate that for elves, dwarves, gnomes or
whatever race you choose. Doing so creates the backdrop for you and
your players to explore new ideas. It creates a more robust and
fantastic world that is far more interesting than the stereotypical
hack and slash dungeon or the usual Tolkien ripoff. </span><span style="font-style: normal;">Be
unique, and you will inspire in your players the same fascination
that I, and perhaps you had, when I first saw the Fabled City of

<br />
Time flies -- through hyperspace, it sometimes seems. Hard to believe that it has been so long since I've posted anything substantive here. And today will be no different.<br />
<br />
I hope to post soon. I have three 3D projects in the pipeline and several scheduled. My workflow is such that all three are worked on concurrently. Two are nearly compete and the third is at maybe 30% completion. If I didn't have to work for a living....<br />
<br />
As for the finished products, while my skill has definitely evolved, I still struggle to age and deform the models. They often look to me to be too pretty. In some cases that is okay, even desirable, but who expects a dungeon to have perfect masonry and no dust or cobwebs? I am also making an effort to reduce the symmetry of my work. Not every castle is concentric, or rectangular, and I'd like to avoid any intimation of perfect 1950s subdivisions in my work.<br />
<br />
I've decided that this "Architect" label is pompous, pretentious and other things beginning with the letter 'P.' So until later, friends, always try to roll a 20!<br />

<br />
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
I'm not referring to non-linear dynamical systems. :)</div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Chaos in alignment can be a very sophisticated concept. What is it?
The absence of law? A governing principle of character and behavior?
How do we treat it in a game reality?</div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-style: normal;">Let's start with some research and
definitions of alignment. </span><span style="font-style: normal;">According
to my edition of </span><span style="font-style: normal;">Holmes </span><span style="font-style: normal;">Basic
(3</span><span style="font-style: normal;">rd</span><span style="font-style: normal;">
Edition, p.8), “Chaotic characters are quite unpredictable and can
not be depended upon to do anything except the unexpected...” This
concept of chaos is eminently playable. It gives parameters, without
limiting players to anything specific. There are years of fun in
this, and we could stop right there.</span></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-style: normal;">This definition describes
individuals. For a wider concept of chaos and more sophisticated
campaign adventures above and below ground, we need something more than Dr.
Holmes </span><span style="font-style: normal;">definition</span><span style="font-style: normal;">.
Turning to Gygax the Great we have, “...alignment describes the
world view of creatures and helps to define what their actions,
reactions and purposes will be.” </span><i> Dungeon Masters Guide,
</i><i>1979 Revised Edition, p.23. </i><span style="font-style: normal;">Rather
than re-typing that which you can read yourself, I 'll summarize by saying that his descriptions of
chaotic alignments in the DMG and the </span><i>Players Handbook (6</i><i>th</i><i>
printing)</i><span style="font-style: normal;"> emphasize freedom and
independence over “law, order, social forms and anything else which
tends to restrict or abridge individual freedom,” </span><span style="font-style: normal;">(ibid.).</span></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-style: normal;">F</span><span style="font-style: normal;">rom
the PHB Second Edition, “The character's alignment is a guide </span><span style="font-style: normal;">to
his basic moral and ethical attitudes towards others, society, good,
evil and the forces of the universe in general. Always consider
alignment as a tool, not a straitjacket that restricts the character.
Although alignment defines general attitudes, it certainly doesn't
prevent a character from changing his beliefs, behaving irrationally
or acting out of character.”</span></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-style: normal;">O</span><span style="font-style: normal;">ther
2e texts also refer to the idea of alignment being a tool rather than
a rigid set of expectations – sounds a lot like a chaotic person's
belief system!</span></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
A convenient on-line dictionary (reference.com) has as a definition
of chaos, “a state of utter confusion or disorder; a total lack of
organization or order.”</div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-style: normal;">Clearly, there are some differing
ideas here – and I'm not even touching later editions. There seems
to be one group that identifies chaos as similar to anarchy. There
seems to be another group that sees chaos as merely highly
individualistic. </span>The more we examine chaos, the more messy it
becomes – which is, of course, appropriately <i>chaotic! </i><span style="font-style: normal;">There
are, I think,</span><span style="font-style: normal;"> </span><span style="font-style: normal;">degrees
of chaos that can be exploited to create a more robust understanding,
but some of this comes down to how you define it.</span></div>
<div style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
How do we define chaos without referencing law?
</div>
<div style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-style: normal;">For example, once upon a time in an
earl</span><span style="font-style: normal;">ier</span><span style="font-style: normal;">
period of my life cycle, I knew someone who claimed to be a
“non-conformist.” He wore purple shirts with green and white
striped pants and black and white sneakers. His hair was, naturally,
reddish orange. He was damn near a walking rainbow. Eventually it was
pointed out to him that even though he took an anti-thetical position
to conformity </span><span style="font-style: normal;">(of dress and
general disposition)</span><span style="font-style: normal;">, his
position outside “conformity” was still </span><i>defined</i><span style="font-style: normal;">
by conformity. </span><span style="font-style: normal;">His position
was not possible without its relation to conformity, so that </span><span style="font-style: normal;">he
was still being defined by conformist beliefs and attitudes. Though
he opposed the slavish attitudes and conventions of conformity, he
was slavishly devoted to a position itself defined by the same
conformity. Could he truly call himself a non-conformist? </span><span style="font-style: normal;">Let's keep in mind this idea of a concept defined by its antithesis as we move on.</span></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
As mentioned earlier, some define chaos as equivalent to anarchy and
lawlessness.<span style="font-style: normal;"> I think of anarchy as fitting of
Chaotic Evil, and as I have described elsewhere, demons and biker
gangs seem good examples. </span><span style="font-style: normal;">What
might be good examples of a non-anarchic chaos?</span></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-style: normal;">Often in fiction and in many
campaigns, the Lawful Good – Chaotic Evil axis is the main
storyline, the dynamic of the grand epic. In the Kemen campaign, it
is the Chaotic Good- Lawful Evil axis that is the primary. </span><span style="font-style: normal;">This
resulted from the affinity that I, and some of my players, shared for
</span><i>Star Wars </i><span style="font-style: normal;">and some
other stories. Darth Vader is (to me) clearly Lawful Evil. Han Solo,
the smuggler with a heart and a sense of loyalty, seems very much
Chaotic Good. Does Gandalf really feel Lawful Good to you? Some think
he's chaotic, others perhaps Neutral Good. </span><span style="font-style: normal;">Other</span><span style="font-style: normal;">
example</span><span style="font-style: normal;">s</span><span style="font-style: normal;">
of Chaotic Good: </span><span style="font-style: normal;">Captain
James Tiberius Kirk; Danny Ocean; James Bond; </span><span style="font-style: normal;">John
Keating, Robin Williams' character in </span><i>Dead Poet's Society.</i></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Now follow me on this last example. When I've used this example in
the past, I've had people tell me that almost everything Robin
Williams did was chaotic because he would <i>randomly</i> generate dialogues
and characters on the spot. That got me thinking to a conversation I
overheard between two teenagers in which Teen B responded to
something Teen A said. Teen A accused Teen B of a <i>non sequitur</i>
by saying, “Random!” Teen B said, “Just because you don't see
the connection doesn't make it random.”</div>
<div style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Just because you don't see the connection doesn't make it random.
Once more, just because <i><b>you</b></i> don't see the connection
doesn't make it random. Just because you don't
see/perceive/understand the order and organization,doesn't meant that
there isn't one.</div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-style: normal;">Chaos is a system of ordering and
organization</span><span style="font-style: normal;"> </span><span style="font-style: normal;">based
on maximizing individual freedoms and independence, rather than rigid laws and linear ideas of order. The fact that you
can't see the order and organization is a reflection of your own
bias. The structure is there, but is imperceptible to those who are
conditioned to see law as “order.” Chaos is a </span><i>different</i><span style="font-style: normal;">
structure. “Just because you don't see the connection doesn't make
it random.” Chaos doesn't have to mean anarchy and doesn't have to depend heavily upon law for its definition.</span><br />
</div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
It takes some brain power, I grant you, to imagine as “normal”
what we here in our ordered world would call “chaos and anarchy.”
I think it can be done. The trick, for me, is to think of chaos as
having degrees. Not everyone who has conservative beliefs or liberal
beliefs is as extreme as the talking heads on tv. Not every chaotic
culture has to be anarchic as well. <i>Yes</i><span style="font-style: normal;">,
some chaotics are anarchists (in my campaign these are CE, these I
have said), but you can be chaotic without being an anarchist.</span></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-style: normal;">O</span><span style="font-style: normal;">ther
concepts could include a place where the laws are plentiful, but
generally ignored by the populace. The laws may exist, but their chaotic nature results in little compliance.</span></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-style: normal;">S</span><span style="font-style: normal;">lyr
Dorom is an example of a chaos-based society from Kemen. The primary
type of law is </span><i>kirun</i><span style="font-style: normal;">
(extended family) law. The </span><i>daina</i><span style="font-style: normal;">
(head) makes the rules for the family. Anyone in the family who does not
like it can appeal to the </span><i>kirun</i><i>,</i><span style="font-style: normal;">
usually a group of family heads. When conflicts occur between
families, the </span><i>kirun</i><span style="font-style: normal;"> of
each meet to arrange a settlement. </span><span style="font-style: normal;">This
ends one of three ways: a settlement, refer up to a noble, or a feud.
When referred up to a neutral arbitrator – say a count or duke –
the decision is final only if the </span><i>kirun</i><span style="font-style: normal;">
of both families choose to accept it. There is a king, but he
actively avoids involvement in anything that doesn't rise to kingdom
level import. Hence, there is kingdom law, and </span><i>kirun</i><span style="font-style: normal;">
law, which sounds like a lot of law. Comparatively little is actually
binding, and most often moral behavior is taught within the kirun.
Laws within the </span><i>kirun </i><span style="font-style: normal;">can
vary quite widely and change often. There is a Mark Twain quote that fits, though it is an afterthought: <i>Laws control the lesser man; right conduct controls the greater.</i></span></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-style: normal;">So, maybe I am </span><span style="font-style: normal;">referring
to </span><span style="font-style: normal;">a </span><span style="font-style: normal;">non-linear
dynamical system!</span></div>
<div style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Some might suggest that this society is really just lawful with
sprinkles of chaos. But alignment is not intended or expected to define
<i>every</i> dimension of a character's behavior, but rather a
general tendency. The same things happen with lawful societies. For
example, adventurers go into the tomb, kill the orcs and nasty things
and keep whatever valuables they find. How do we reconcile killing
the orcs and taking <i>their</i> treasure? Pass a law? <i>What about their
civil rights, Mr. Paladin? </i><span style="font-style: normal;">At
some point, you have to let go of reality and play the game.</span></div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>

<br />
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;">The
term 'diametrically opposed' is usually used to refer to the
alignment most opposite that of a selected reference alignment on the
standard alignment chart. In this representation, Lawful Good is
considered to be diametrically opposed to Chaotic Evil, Chaotic Good
to Lawful Evil, and so forth.</span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;"> The
alignments that are diametrically opposed are also usually considered
to be arch rivals of each other, as they represent the scalar
opposite of both dimensions. Evil is the ultimate opposite of good,
law that of chaos. Hence, Chaotic Evil is the the scalar opposite of
Lawful Good. </span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;"> </span>
</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;"> The
neutral alignments, while they can be thought of as being in some
ways diametrically opposed to each other, are really border
alignments. As possible as it is that they could form an additional
dimension, this is conceptually impractical.</span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;"> This
is the usual <i>human</i> conceptualization of alignment, but it is
not the only one. </span>
</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;"> If
one considers time as a variable, alignment can be seen as an
evolution. The progression of a society, or even an individual,
through the alignments can produce a <i>second diametrical
opposition.</i><span style="font-style: normal;"> This is especially
true of those races with longer lifespans, such as the elves.</span></span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;"> Chaotic
Good elves can be thought of as opposed diametrically to both Lawful
Evil and Chaotic Evil. In regard to Lawful Evil, the opposition is
one of basic nature and beliefs. In considering the second
opposition, Chaotic Evil is seen as the end of the progression, while
Chaotic Good is seen as the origin (see <i>Culture and Alignment</i>).
As such, the beginning and the end are diametrically opposed. </span></div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;"> </span>
</div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;"> From
the perspective of the Chaotic Good elf, Chaotic Evil is embodied
most by the Drow and by demons. The Drow can be considered to be
de-evolved, to have abandoned their beliefs, to have disgraced
themselves by willingly turning from the light. They represent death
and hatred. They have succumbed to the seduction of power and have
sullied themselves by engaging in self-indulgent and debasing
behavior. They have not lost, but willingly discarded any value or
respect for life other than their own. They are not only an
aberration, a mutation of the best to become the worst, they are an
intentionally, purposefully and unapologetically self-created
abomination.</span></div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;"> From
the Drow position, Chaotic Good elves are the willfully ignorant,
those who cling to beliefs that, by Drow reckoning, are demonstrably
false. They have failed to evolve, are unenlightened
(unendarkened?), and cannot accept reality. They are both worthy and
demanding of scorn because they have forsaken their destiny. At best,
one might pity them for their wasted potential, but in the end they
must be destroyed for the betterment of the race. To suffer them to
live, is to allow a defective to procreate. Their death is not
murder, is the necessary extinction of the weak. These are hard
truths to some, but truths that the Drow judge themselves strong
enough to accept.</span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;">
As such Chaotic Good elves (as well as other long-lived Chaotic Good
creatures) are diametrically opposed not only to Lawful Evil
creatures, but also to Drow, demons, and the sentient Chaotic Evil.
Lawful Good and Lawful Evil share a dimension, and as such can
appreciate each other's methods if not the ends. There is no such
appreciation between the Chaotic Good and Chaotic Evil in the second
diametric opposition, though no doubt the singly diametrically
opposed might suggest that such an appreciation is possible.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;">If you're looking for more 3D images and things, you should know that I am continuing to work on these, but my progress is limited by the need to learn the ins and outs of some pretty sophisticated software. There are currently two works in progress. There will be another post on alignment this week I think -- if I can clean it up fast enough.</span></div>

<style type="text/css">td p { margin-bottom: 0in; }p { margin-bottom: 0.08in; }</style>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;"> Though we
often think of alignment as fixed, cultures and societies cycle
though the alignments. This is especially true in Kemen. What follows
is a description of alignments with attention paid to how alignment
relates to groups. In this scheme, the cycle begins with Chaotic Good
and progresses in a counter-clockwise rotation around the usual
alignment chart. The descriptions below of the individual alignments
are listed in a way that facilitates the understanding of their
differences rather than the flow between them. This aspect is
discussed later.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;"> Chaotic
Evil is all about the individual. Rape and pillage, murder and
mayhem, for the fun of it. CE has as its central tenets the thrill of
doing whatever one wants on impulse, regardless of the
'consequences.' There is no accountability. Street gangs and
motorcycle gangs (in the classic sense) are good analogs for CE.
There may be a leader, but he (usually) only decides what the group
will do, and does not compel membership. When very large groups
coalesce, there may be a 'council' of leaders, but this is a short
lived confederation rather a permanent alliance. Members are free
agents, and follow because they choose to do so. They share this
voluntary membership with CG, but without proscription against doing
evil.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;"> Lawful
Evil is less about the raw emotion involved in evil acts, and more
about control, domination, dominion and slavery. This is organized
evil. It is insidious, and the true notion of what is usually
referred to in the Earth Zero concept of evil. There is a hierarchy
whose purpose is to maintain control. It is the focus on control at
all costs that characterizes this alignment. In LE, the individual
serves the hierarchy (usually a tyranny, even if the leadership is a
group). Membership is compulsory. Chaos is seen as desirable only if
it is controlled and serves the hierarchy goals. As nations grow, the
focus of leaders turns to staying in power and defending the populace
from evil and outsiders. Eventually, this leads to merely staying in
power. Leaders become Lawful Evil, as the focus is law. While power
is centralized, over time population and conquests increase. Parcels
of power are issued to maintain control. As time and population
increase, even these controls become ineffective and eventually the
society disintegrates into chaotic evil. Techno-industrial societies
are good examples of LE, as is the movie <i>Brazil</i><span style="font-style: normal;">.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;"> Neutral
Evil is the alignment of the loner. He cares not about group
membership and may be found as a part of any evil group, so long as
it benefits him. He appears completely self serving, but less open
about it as CE, as this could result in things that are undesirable
to him. In truth, he is neutral out of fear usually, and sees his own
safety, self-preservation and survival as being dependent upon not
taking a stand. It is the effect and spread of neutral evil ( in the
form of corruption) that tends to be the downfall of LE societies.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;"> Chaotic
Good focuses on the rights of the individual and is limited only by
the responsibility to avoid doing evil. Control is seen as the first
step towards evil. Societies start out as Chaotic Good. Families and
'population centers' are far enough apart to allow people to live in
freedom without the interference of others. If life becomes too
oppressive, there is room to move away. Altruism originates in the
individual's sense of moral duty and 'being a good neighbor.' Law is
seen as desirable only when absolutely necessary.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;"> Neutral
Good tend to be the unaffected. They are inconsistent followers of
law, but are always mindful of what is good. They are often loners.
Caine in Kung Fu, is a good example. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;"> As
population increases, more laws become necessary to prevent the
spread of evil acts. This restricts individual freedoms, but is
deemed necessary to prevent evil. This is generally the start of
large nations. This results in the society becoming Lawful Good.
Chaos ('freedom') is seen as desirable only if it is limited. In this
respect it provides the opportunity for 'wild card' solutions and
influences. LG focuses on law as the way to provide limited freedom
for the most people, and provide for the common good. Individual
rights are considered secondary to the greater good, and may be
abridged without recourse or reconciliation. Law is the way to
promote good.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;"> Lawful
Neutrals are in love with love the law and respect it regardless of
whether the result is good or evil. Ever meet a lawyer? </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;"> </span>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;"> Chaotic
Neutral are in a like respect indifferent to good or evil, and
respect only freedom.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;"> True
Neutrals focus on balance above all else. This philosophy generates
only small societies, usually no larger than towns and villages.</span></div>

CE is generally a one way trip because the society disintegrates. The
survivors are beginning again, at CG.</span></div>

<div style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Abyssinica SIL;">:) Yes, I do think a lot. For most
adventures, this material is pretty much academic. For campaign
adventures, where there are events that occur outside the immediate
vicinity of the PC's, understanding how things move can help you
understand how it got to be the way that it is – whicih provides
grist for the mill. Knowing that a current agrarian society (CG)
shuns an area of ruins because they are the descendants of the LE
citystate that fell into the ruin and anarchy of CE, gives you
backstory and direction for the future.</span></div>

This new machine is much more powerful, and I'm hoping to experience a bump in productivity. The previous machine had a Core Duo processor...<br />
<br />
It will obviously be a little for me while I to get used to thing, but I expect to be posting more 3D maps and models soon.<br />

<br />
Good grief, where the hell have I been? <br />
<br />
Hard at work learning new software. I'm not really that kind of person, you know, that tech guy who is always talking about something in TechnoJive about which most people haven't the slightest glimmer of understanding. But dammit, either this is going to look like I picture it in my head or I'm not doing it. And I'm close.<br />
<br />
This is all of course, pertaining to the Grand Temple at Yethlyreom. Wow. It's March now, isn't it?<br />
<br />
I have also been a few other places. Kemen is not the Earth, you know. Or perhaps, Kemen is not the Earth you know. Actually, it is located in the Small Magellanic Cloud ( which used to be called the Lesser Magellanic Cloud...). It is an Earthlike planet about the size of Mercury orbiting a G5 star, with two satellites. The combined mass of the two of them is a little less then that of the Earth's moon, though one of them is scarcely larger than a large asteroid. Tides are about the same as of Earth, though more frequent. The orbital period of Kemen is 360 days, with four 90 day seasons. The year is divided into 12 months, but most cultures follow a 6 day week with 5 weeks per month.<br />
<br />
Some do not. One culture has a 5 day week and 6 weeks per month, but they also use a base five number system.<br />
<br />
There have been some other diversions, as well. I consider most this to be creative work, and I have learned that in creative work if you force it, you create crap. So when my creative wanderlust urges me to make notes about a Thieves Guild that is sort of like Oceans Eleven or that <em>this</em> baron should really be a <em>duke</em>, I yield to it.<br />
<br />
If you've seen my Portown model, or the Green Dragon, you have some idea concerning the level of detail I insist upon. Each of those windows and doors was placed individually. That model may as well have been an elaborate, historically accurate, on-this-day, no-not-that blue-this-blue train set, for all the work that went into it. I am a hobbyist.<br />
<br />
That said, this damn temple has to have the right look to have the right feel, but it also has to get done. I'm working on it. Mostly.<br />
<br />
Trying for monthly updates until the next release, <br />
A.levallonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03721775600586585610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3359534882275401214.post-13664774441490775512015-02-06T21:35:00.002-08:002015-02-06T21:37:29.472-08:00UpdateGreetings all, <br />
<br />
Just an update: I'm still slogging away at the Temple at Yethlyreom. Some difficult work, but I think the end result will be worth it. <br />
<br />
Best, Alevallonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03721775600586585610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3359534882275401214.post-57499113631464987162015-01-25T21:00:00.002-08:002015-01-25T21:03:42.034-08:00The Coming YearGreetings and Happy New Year to all those who wish to have one! (Far be it from me to tell you what kind of year to have...)<br />
<br />
<div>
In case anyone's wondering, I'm working on some 3D witchery -- rather, learning how to use the software (or is it more suited to the times to say "app?"). I soon hope to be able to share the results.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
In the coming months, you can expect to see the Grand Temple of Yethlyreom in all it's glory. This will put the palace to shame. The palace was a primarily linear affair, while the temple is all about curves and domes. Those familiar with the palace might have taken note of the mosaic of Thasaidon (or one of his personas). There will be an expansion on this theme, a rather dramatic one.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Though there were many gods in the Yethlyri pantheon, they only celebrated the ones they did not fear - and whom they hoped would deliver them from the rest. These were</div>
<div>
</div>
<ul>
<li>Thasaidon, a fiend yes, likely to make any deal for your soul, but also the God of Magic and Death.</li>
<li>
<div style="background: none; font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;">Mordiggian, The Charnel God,
Eater of the Dead</span></div>
</li>
<li><div style="background: none; font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;">Alila, Goddess of Perdition and
Iniquity; the Goddess of Sin and Treachery</span></div>
</li>
<li><div style="background: none; font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;">Ililot, Goddess of Love and
Hate; usually appears as a lovely young woman, but don't piss her off, as she avenges the wronged lover.</span></div>
</li>
<li><div style="background: none; font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;">Thamagorgos, God of the Outer
Void.</span></div>
</li>
</ul>
<div style="background: none; font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Cambria;">As a side note, my reading of the pronunciation here is that <I> alone makes the "ee" sound, but when following <a> gives "ay." <T> appears to be silent unless accompanied with an <h>. Hence, Thah-SAY-duhn, Mohr-DEEG-ee-un, Ah-LEE-la, EE-lee-loh, and Thah-mah-GOHR-gohs.</span></div>
<div style="background: none; font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Cambria;"></span> </div>
<div style="background: none; font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Cambria;">If you've studied Tolkien, you might be aware that history can affect language, and in fact in some ways be derived from it. I have no idea what this might mean for Yethlyreom as yet, but thinking about it is more fun than preparing my taxes.</span></div>
<ul>
</ul>
levallonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03721775600586585610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3359534882275401214.post-32618468267996254412014-12-05T20:40:00.000-08:002014-12-05T20:40:25.259-08:00And Now For Something Completely Different
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
No, I'm not conducting a class on How
Not To Be Seen. I have said elsewhere that I need a break from the
Portown Project, and that I would eventually return to it. At
present, anything more that I might do with Portown requires a level
of skill and knowledge about modeling that I do not possess. I have
turned my attention to other projects, but some of these also have
some pretty strict requirements regarding how they must look
(specifically <em>Aduiltham</em>, an elf compound similar to Rivendell). I
need something that I can experiment with, something that is not
strictly defined – at least, not as yet.</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
So we travel about 1000 miles south to
Yethlyreom*. An ancient city-state, it is removed both in distance
and in time. It is located in the rain shadow of a mountain range at
a latitude that gets little rain to begin with. <span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;"><span style="font-style: normal;">In
addition, there is also a dust bowl effect from over farming and
forest depletion. As if these things weren't enough, there is a rift
valley nearby with volcanoes that throw ash on top of the dust. Even
in its prime, water would have been a treasured commodity, except
that the Yethlyri feared large bodies of water. In the pantheon of
their religion were Cthulhu, Tsathoggua, Dagon and “Mother Hydra”
(Blidoolpoolp), and as a result they abhorred the sea, lakes and the
like. They prayed to the remaining gods of the pantheon to protect
them from these four. Unfortunately for them, the remaining gods of
the pantheon were not especially benevolent. Yethlyreom is now a ruined and abandoned city half buried in 1000 years worth of dust, sand and ash.</span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;">The
city lies in a complex crater (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complex_crater" target="_blank">Learn about it here</a>), with the palace, a public square and
the temple built upon the summit of the central mound, and the
necropolis is built on the rim of the crater (Oh, the plans I have
for <em>that</em>...). Due to the environmental factors mentioned above, the
ruins of Yethlyreom and the land surrounding it for miles and miles
is a dusty, ashy wasteland.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;">Below
is the palace of the King/Emperor/Overlord/whatever-I-eventually
decide to call him. I'm especially tickled by the mosaic of Thasaidon
on the second floor. I took a picture from the internet, altered it
in GIMP, they used the mosaic feature to create a jpg. Then I
imported the jpg into Sketchup. </span>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
This is an exciting project for me as I am learning things that I can use elsewhere -- like a coastal settlement you may be familiar with. The erosion was done using the Erode extension. I like it, but the finished product is huge in terms of memory. Towards the end, Sketchup became very slow. There are probably many other things to learn. Considering that I've been modeling for about six months or so, I don't think this is too bad.</div>

Next up, the temple. With the coming holidays, I wouldn't expect any new posts to appear before sometime in January. I will still be reachable, however.</div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Constantia, serif;">The
AD&D system does little to convey the sense of evil of two of the
most iconic specimens of evil: devils and demons.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Constantia, serif;"> A
review of the listings in the various monster tomes describes devils
and demons as essentially a cross of other species, similar to
manticores and griffons. They are a list of statistics. This denies
the experience of supernatural evil that these beings embody. A
better conception of a demon is that of J.R.R. Tolkien's Balrog. The
creature is described as a being of 'shadow and flame.' This is
substantially different from the AD&D version of these creatures.
I attempt to keep the following in mind when playing these NPC's.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Constantia, serif;"> Devils
are more than just humanoids with shocking features, such as horns
and hooves. They delight in suffering. They do not kill for the sake
of killing. Devils play by rules – but will twist them to their
advantage. In the end, they do play by rules because they are lawful
beings, and as a result devils roam free. They will not just
arbitrarily kill Bob the Barbarian. Instead they will target those
people and things that are important to Bob, who to whom Bob is
important. For example, a devil will prefer to torture Bob to cause
pain and anguish to Larry the Lord and Patricia the princess. The
greater the devil, the greater the scheme. A lesser devil might
torture and enslave Bob just for the hell of it. More 'sophisticated'
devils are likely to torture Bob so that Larry and Patricia can see
it. Further, they will trick Bob in to thinking that Larry and
Patricia have abandoned and forsaken him, causing Bob more anguish
and more emotional pain for Larry and Patricia as well. Morgoth is a
good example in The Silmarillion. He tortured Hurin by giving the
ability to see the results of his machinations against Hurin's
children. Sauron, Morgoth's servant, by contrast was far less
sophisticated, as his chief aim was deception for purposes of
enslavement.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Constantia, serif;"> Devils
are likely to regard demons as 'baby evil' – unsophisticated, but
something to be fond of, nonetheless. Demons are interested in
destruction and defilement. They will kill merely to create chaos and
to satisfy bloodlust. Worse, they take pleasure in defiling the
sacred, even to the extent of violating human bodies. Causing a
human's nose to move around their body so that it is permanently
placed just over their ass would strike a demon as hilariously
amusing. Demons flaunt rules, and for this reason, their tenure on
the Prime Material Plane tends to be limited in some way. For
example, they may be able to wield their power without limit, but not
be allowed to leave the place of their conjuring. </span><span style="font-family: Constantia, serif;"><i>Night
of the Demons</i></span><span style="font-family: Constantia, serif;"><span style="font-style: normal;">
is a good example.</span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Constantia, serif;"> While
demons and devils do have some physical characteristics, they should
be played as being supernatural – like Tolkien's Balrog. Care,
however, should be taken to avoid describing them according to the
elements – just because one is made of smoke doesn't require one
made of fog. Yes, this is a deliberate swipe at the <i>Fiend Folio</i>
and the thought behind it, the idea that we must fill every category
in an ordered fashion. Just because a shadow world exists, does not
mean that we must have a lawful good shadow were-weird fighting the
underwater pseudo quasi hyper-aerated mer-elemental. Demons and devils are more
than mutated physical creatures – this isn't <i>Gamma</i> <i>World!
</i>These are beings who are there and not-there. If players
confronted with these beings go immediately into strategy, thinking
about magic resistance and magical weapons and such, you've lost some
of the flavor of demons and devils, as well as that of fantasy RPG's
in general.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Constantia, serif;"> It
is sometimes best to to follow the lead of horror writers. Rather
than telling the players what it is, start with a description of the
evidence they observe that this <i>thing</i> is interacting with
their physical world. Show them footprints, describe a smell, use
very descriptive and figurative language. H. P Lovecraft often made
mention of the Unnameable, both in the sense of being taboo to
discuss but also the lack of words to describe it. In this there was
a degree of horror. How will you describe non-Euclidean geometry or
Cyclopean geometry to players without using those terms? How do you convey gravity that
is <i>wrong, </i>colors that are <i>sentient, </i>reality that is
<em>unreal? </em>Or actions that betray a shocking un-morality, without stooping to the merely vulgar by engaging in simple shock value like a group of teenage boys? Will you subtly change the background music during the
game (aren't remote controls great?)? These are the things that demons
and devils are made of, and to play them otherwise is to suck the
magic out of a game that has magic as part of its basic premise. Here, perhaps more than anywhere else, the ability to maintain the suspension of disbelief is paramount. Any
game system can only provide a framework. The transmission of the
message of horror, terror, and evil is the responsibility of the DM.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Constantia;">Should you have any tips you'd like to share, remember that comments are always welcome.</span></div>

In a previous post of I have stated
that that Portown is one of two port cities along a long coastline.
This is due to the saltmarsh and instability of the soil along much
of the coast. Most towns are several miles inland.
<br />
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
“Most” of course is not “all.”
There are many fishing villages along the coast, built with the
flimsiest of structures. In fact, there is a village that bears a
similarity to Venice, in that there are a number of little marsh
isles upon which homes are built, with fishing boats moored right
along side. The channels are “streets.”</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
There is also an area about 25 - 75
miles west of Portown, called Montydo in Kemen. The area is similar
to the Everglades, though smaller. Near the coast it is mangrove and
saltmarsh, while further inland it eventually becomes freshwater
swamp. It is here that the Temple of the Frog is located. If you do
not have this module by Dave Arneson, you are missing out.</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Those of you who have or have read the
module know that there are some things to explain, and by this I mean
“Saint Stephen.”</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
In Kemen, a common form of salutation
is, “Greetings, traveller.” (For space and other considerations,
I will not translate this into the local tongue.) However, there is
another kind of traveller, and I make the distinction by spelling it
Travellor. Travellors are beings that have found a way to cross into
Kemen through means of n-dimensional travel. For those familiar with
Robert Heinlein's The Number of the Beast, Saint Stephen is a Black
Hat. Those who arrive via regular interstellar means are referred to
as Visitors.</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
This explains the presence of certain
other … beings … in Kemen. You do not need to know this. It is
however an example of creating a sense of personal continuity. Some
of the TSR modules mixed fantasy and sci-fi, in part as a deliberate
attempt to spin off other games and make money. Often, there was no
coherent or satisfactory explanation for the juxtaposition.</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Personally, I don't like that. I think
that it shatters the suspension of disbelief for these things to mix
without a defined context, and I'll not have such things in my
campaign to satisfy the marketing campaign of a now defunct company.</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Further, in the rare cases that a
plausible context is suggested, it is pretty thin. In response, I
find that it is best to tailor my own context, to devise a backdrop
that fits with the flavor of my campaign. In the spirit of Gygax's
oft repeated mantra that the DM is the final arbiter of what occurs
in his or her campaign, rulebooks notwithstanding – what I refer to
as the DM Standard License – I encourage everyone to do the same.
It's your world. Don't let someone else tell you how to run it. That includes me. The information that I offer on this blog is meant to inspire. It is not unalterable gospel -- unless you are on Kemen.</div>

Here is another way we can use
available facts about Portown and the Portown 3D model to craft
adventures.<br />
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Portown's fresh water comes from a
number of wells, which themselves are fed by the underground river
known to exist from the original dungeon map by J. Eric Holmes. The
only other available source of freshwater is the small pond behind
the bath house in the model. The bath house uses water from this pond
for the baths. The owner of the bath house has asked Lord Baron
Krindell (Sir Travis in Pinnell's module) to prohibit others from
using the pond's waters. Krindell has declared that these waters are
for all to use – because the bath house refused to pay his price in
exchange for sole use. Since this is the only bath house in town and
water is not abundant, most residents rarely bathe. The wealthier
residents sometimes do and sometimes even visit the bath house, but
the usual customers there are sailors who have just arrived in port
and received their wages and share. As a result, the wealthy tend to
go only when there is not a ship in port. Residents instead visit the
markets to buy perfumes and personal scents.</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
This question about the source of fresh
water leads to another question: where does the, um, “not-so-fresh”
water go?
</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Into the sewer of course, but where
does the sewer water go? The Portown sewers were built over top of
the ruins of the old city. From there, none know.
</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
How does all this lead to an
adventure...?</div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
“ENOUGH! Speak plainly!” commanded
Thal Krindell, Lord Baron of Portown.
</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
“I will speak as commanded milord,”
said Yorell, the travelling mystic and magician. “But none save the
Lord Baron himself can know what he will hear,” he added
stingingly. Before anyone could speak of his impertinence he went on.</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
“From where comes the water that the
people of Montydo (Portown, see below*) draw from their wells? From
what unknown aquifer flows this stream?” he asked of the assembled
hall. Playing to the crowd, he asked, “To where do your sewers
flow? And how can you know when there are none left alive that saw
them builded?” He paused to allow these questions to sink in.</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
“Montydo was built on top of an
older city...a <i>much </i><span style="font-style: normal;">older
city. Its sewers lie on top of the streets of its older sister, and
into them flow the wastes of your townsfolk. Down these ruined
streets to what sewers there once were, and on to where none can
say.”</span></div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
“So you say!”
yelled out Tymos, the baron's most senior retainer and captain of his
guard. The man glanced at the Lord Baron, then quickly hung his head
and looked to the floor, evidently in fear of some reprimand.</div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
“You would
speak, Tymos?” asked the Lord Baron.</div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
The man kneeled.
“Forgive my outburst, milord! It grieves me to stand witness as
this charlatan weaves a tapestry of lies and midwifery, as if to
beguile you!”</div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
“Then you shall
put your questions to him, and I shall listen.” Tymos turned and
smiled with venom.</div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
“You say that
there are none left alive who saw the sewers built. How then know you
where they run? Save that your undertaker knows not his work!”</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-style: normal;"> “You
need not believe me about where your sewers run,” said Yorell, “nor
upon that which your city is builded. Are not the sewers there? Who
among you has seen such building, such stonework? And where, Captain,
do the sewer waters go?”</span></div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
“I have not been
in the habit of frequenting sewers, magician,” said Tymos,
spitefully.</div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
“Nor I,” said
Yorell, laughing. “Neither am I a lich.” Then, this to the Lord
Baron: “If you know not where comes your water, you know not what
you drink, milord. If you know not where your sewers go, might they
not go to and come from the same place?</div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
“I have
travelled far,” he continued speaking to the room, “and heard
tales from other cities, and other towns, that your sister city lies
beneath you. Swallowed up she was, by sea and earth, together with
her people and her riches. Now, you and your people eat and sleep
over them all, and in the morning empty your chamber pots into their
streets. Pray her sewers do not come full, lest your own city be
swallowed by your own refuse.”</div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Krindell sat back
in his plush hair, in thought. He had perked up at the mention of
riches. “And you seek leave to explore the filth filled sewers in
service to the people of Montydo?”</div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
“I, alone,
wouldn't dare. There are also stories of Zenopus...” At the mention
of the name, a shadow seemed to cross the faces of those in the room.</div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Yet, in the Lord
Baron's face was reflected the signs of a strategy, fast forming.
“Tymos, you will take two men and accompany our friend Yorell here,
and report back to me.”</div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Tymos made move to
object, but catching his lord's eye, subsided in submission.</div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
It was decided.</div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
</div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Later, as the
castle slept, Tymos met Yorell in the darkened hall.
</div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
“An equal share,
then?” asked Tymos.</div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
“Fool! Clever as
was our intrigue today, think not that Krindell is besotted! He sent
you to watch me, do you think that he will not send another to watch
us both? Nay, we must see that the portion we bring him is large
enough to rest his suspicions, and divide the rest between us.
Perhaps, the journey will become treacherous though, hmm? Were the
two us alone to survive and return, we could divide the portions as
we see fit, hiding our shares and stealing back to collect them at
our leisure. But for Krindell's portion, amongst we two, equal
shares.”</div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
“On the morrow,
then?”</div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
“On the morrow,
at the Green Dragon. And rest well, for we will have need of more
than our greed to sustain us.”</div>
<br />
<br />
And as they
parted, they knew not that they were overheard by one hidden in the
shadows...<br />
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
So, a greedy lord,
a pair of conspirators, a shadowy figure... Of course one wouldn't
read this to the players, except perhaps as an epilogue.
</div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
You will have to
design the sewers, but I see these as about four to five feet wide, perhaps
six feet high covered with a tightly fitted stone arch, running
roughly east to west. Side sewers would contribute to the main line,
most in the form of a 3 foot diameter pipe. The Cloaca Maxima in Rome
is much larger, so this fits in terms of technology. I imagine the
sewers to be at a slightly greater depth than the first level of
Holmes' Sample Dungeon. The second level of the Holmes dungeon would
be about the same level as the sewers, with the third level being the
first joint level. This is consistent with Holmes' split level dungeon ideas.
</div>
<br />
<div align="LEFT" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Holmes Dungeon Sewer</div>
<br />
<div align="LEFT" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
I ---</div>
<br />
<div align="LEFT" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
II Sewer, first level below sea level</div>
<br />
<div align="LEFT" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
III Upper Ruins</div>
<br />
<div align="LEFT" style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
The
sewer level should include holes in the earth where water pours into
the the upper ruins. This should be a fair drop, perhaps a cascade.
The upper ruins should be full of raw sewage, and Portown's favorite
son: rats. No really worthwhile treasure should be found until a
significant depth is reached, and there should be real danger in
taking it.</div>
<br />
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Our friend, Tymos,
will be bringing two men with him (one of them a spy for the Lord
Baron), so of course Yorell will feel outnumbered. He will hire PC's
from the 'Dragon. Somewhere along the line treachery will occur, but
will it be Tymos and Yorell killing or abandoning the rest, or will
the conspirators turn on each other? What of the shadowy figure? A
thief perhaps, or maybe a spy for the Order of Daegon? Will anyone
return from the depths of this suburb of Y'ha-nthlei...?</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
* Portown is a known entity among many
players, so I disguise it by changing the name to the local dialect.
Guess what Montydo means...

<br />
As I promised here is a post of errata - things that didn't make it into the model or things that I wanted to do but couldn't - or haven't yet.<br />
<br />
I previously mentioned wanting to get a jpg of Portown from the window of the Green Dragon.<br />
<br />
I would like to add light sources. In one version of the model, I had one of those wagon wheel chandelier things with candles on it in the main dining hall, but it did not make it into subsequent models. So I picture a couple of those around. I imagine oil lamps in the kitchen, and some type of lantern in the game rooms throwing light upon the game boards while leaving the rest of the room in relative shadow.<br />
<br />
I'm really not at all satisfied with the windows. I would prefer some sort of diamond paned glass, still in a square wooden casing. Also, I think that in a seaport shutters would be most appropriate.<br />
<br />
My biggest complaint about the Green Dragon Inn model and the Portown model is actaully a complaint about the Sketchup software -- it's too clean. I picture Portown as a town full of buildings covered in salt spray. Various places in disrepair and decay, full of rough edges. There really isn't a way of conveying this in Sketchup, short of creating your own materials, which is no small task.<br />
<br />
I would also like to add more unique and singular architectural pieces -- friezes, bas reliefs, etc, even some stone gargoyles.<br />
<br />
As I told a new acquiantance recently, it feels as though I've spent most of my summer and fall in Portown. I think I may need to take some time away from it, but I know that I will eventually return. Until then, I will undoubtedly continue to use 3D modelling in my campaign, and to use this blog to describe some of the details of Kemen. I hope that you find something useful here.<br />
<br />
Best, Alevallonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03721775600586585610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3359534882275401214.post-1234735119078930372014-10-19T20:47:00.001-07:002014-11-23T17:22:17.193-08:00As Above, So Below?Here is a quick 3D model of a dungeon level that I did last night. It looks like a cross between a Tron movie and a 1980's neon nightmare, but there is a reason.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSweqejm_U6oDazHioeAkWUoWoLmcGaP8gazPfXMclk5gMtwUJcMqoCLiL2PbxHmQuhmw9779kJGDkKlVVb-Ca9KT1vr-96DDsrty4FRa-AbRyaGBQMxf0LTzXB2j3r86Nw8A8ANvdqhY/s1600/MV+B2Ja.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSweqejm_U6oDazHioeAkWUoWoLmcGaP8gazPfXMclk5gMtwUJcMqoCLiL2PbxHmQuhmw9779kJGDkKlVVb-Ca9KT1vr-96DDsrty4FRa-AbRyaGBQMxf0LTzXB2j3r86Nw8A8ANvdqhY/s1600/MV+B2Ja.jpg" height="175" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This "level" is from a dungeon that is actually a magical tower. PC's climb up through the "manhole," marked red in the image. Each color is about 5-10' below the previous color. The colors by height: red, orange, yellow, brown, light green, dark green.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVy1m7bvoGG0krJ9TRFzqNxYtmCY9hR76XSFxUGo_xeyoOYu5LVFVyI8x4_T-CEYuTlZpAxtS_N5gVZrx5gncDxlaWEfop-l_ONqDxfaGeMfkPmzbG3Ymbjob-6LcdaZk-W-5pNbYTahc/s1600/MV+B2Jb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVy1m7bvoGG0krJ9TRFzqNxYtmCY9hR76XSFxUGo_xeyoOYu5LVFVyI8x4_T-CEYuTlZpAxtS_N5gVZrx5gncDxlaWEfop-l_ONqDxfaGeMfkPmzbG3Ymbjob-6LcdaZk-W-5pNbYTahc/s1600/MV+B2Jb.jpg" height="175" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The light blue areas are ramps. As it happens, this structure was not built to cater to human type creatures. The grade on most of the ramps is extreme. Gentle enough to go down perhaps, but going back up will prove difficult. Imagine moving from the brown level to the green level via the ramp in the image above, only to discover an indigenous inhabitant(s) who chooses to behave aggressively in response to your trespassing. Going back the way you came will prove difficult.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj06wr1gq0cYIeIwJ4QJC4Ivktns_DWbAOK14lD_RILAvbkYz2V3heuZ90gT2iCq7bWoYrvUXn0w-VnIUk5nKN0I3WhBDDulJRBqRoOe_evtIqPzlhFO7v_u2FIlwB0MCAYEV7FBCzew0E/s1600/MV+B2Jc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj06wr1gq0cYIeIwJ4QJC4Ivktns_DWbAOK14lD_RILAvbkYz2V3heuZ90gT2iCq7bWoYrvUXn0w-VnIUk5nKN0I3WhBDDulJRBqRoOe_evtIqPzlhFO7v_u2FIlwB0MCAYEV7FBCzew0E/s1600/MV+B2Jc.jpg" height="175" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This ramp is about twenty feet high. Maybe you could slide down. Maybe you're about to feed something nasty that has learned that sometimes dinner comes from above.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2RfzDwECRVAtEZOzDhHUCVfqKHRONJQ6IiB3gAc-odCG7PLQcpWhH3Ev4iMsSaQFkOMjE9YL-c_BN0r4EUtSt_neFx73zIq9_Ok58BPJMM164fxSWiS9zhIMSm69lyyOe3nqifrbqMDs/s1600/MV+B2Jd.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2RfzDwECRVAtEZOzDhHUCVfqKHRONJQ6IiB3gAc-odCG7PLQcpWhH3Ev4iMsSaQFkOMjE9YL-c_BN0r4EUtSt_neFx73zIq9_Ok58BPJMM164fxSWiS9zhIMSm69lyyOe3nqifrbqMDs/s1600/MV+B2Jd.jpg" height="175" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This idea could be used for pre-human cities buried beneath Portown, with the direction reversed. Non-human cities would have an infrastructure and geometry that looks very different from what we might be used to.<br />
<br />
Best, A<br />

Therefore I have set them up on Google Drive. If you are interested in downloading them, email or post and I will add you to the share drive.levallonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03721775600586585610noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3359534882275401214.post-73273513533939371432014-10-17T19:25:00.001-07:002014-10-17T19:29:27.885-07:00The Green Dragon Inn, 3D modelGreetings All, <br />
<br />
First, some genealogy. In 1977, J. Eric Holmes wrote the Basic Rules edition of Dungeons and Dragons. Included in it was a sample dungeon near a town called Portown.<br />
<br />
Later, a person known to me only as Paleologos created and published on the web a map of a Portown, which he or she based off of a port on the island of Crete (2012). With the permission of Paleologos, R.C. Pinnell published his own version of the town (2013), complete with a user expandable key.<br />
<br />
In 2014, with Mr. Pinnell's permission, I published a 3D model of Portown using Sketchup ( a <em>free</em> 3D modeling tool - get it <a href="http://www.sketchup.com/?gclid=Cj0KEQjw_IKiBRD7rPqut_OZ4qgBEiQASm4GAr90bpq5r9XLuyUh0Q2S10t0-0GAtOGksRRIPvbGDj8aAm8n8P8HAQ" target="_blank">here</a> ). The current model of the Green Dragon is based on Pinnell's floorplans.<br />
<br />
Now for the fun! I had intended to imbed this model into the Portown model and provide a view of Portown from inside the Green Dragon. I have been unsuccessful. I'll keep trying and maybe one day I can do that.<br />
<br />
Below is the exterior of the assembled model.<br />

<br />
Note, that this includes the cellar and a third floor. The third floor is my own addition. It includes an additional Common Room (because as a large and popular inn, the Dragon is popular with sailors, and one ship's crew can easily use up the limited bunks; and it is sometimes advisable to separate crews...), some more private rooms and suites, a maid's quarters, and a secret library for magical research accessed from the second floor. The kegs and casks in the cellar are pretty heavy, and summoning a demon or devil to work the Friday night barback shift would draw unwanted attention, so I imagine the owners hire help. The upstairs maids' quarters is for the young peasant girls who are working until they are married off (or whatever other scenario is convenient). The door is located around the corner and out of site of the Common Room and the door locks from the inside; a precaution against drunken sailors.<br />
<br />
Here is an exploded view.<br />

<br />
Once you have downloaded and installed Sketchup, send me an email or post a comment here and I will send you the file. Then you can explore it all you wish, including the third floor which is under the roof. Use the Orbit tool (looks like a red and green top) to examine the model from any angle. Use the Zoom tool (magnifying glass; if you have a wheel mouse this is much easier) to push through the window and explore the inside. Also, the Pan tool is helpful (looks like a hand). The images posted here are JPEGs, and can be clicked to enlarge. Unfortunately, I cannot post the Sketchup file here.<br />
<br />
Feel free to post any questions about the model or Sketchup here, and I was answer as best as I can. Over the next week or so I will post Errata: things I wanted to do but couldn't figure out how, things I might try one day, things I thought of too late, and perhaps some fun background. Remember, this is all free.<br />
<br />
Have fun and best wishes,<br />
